FTAO wall strap/blocking forces represent the force carried across an opening by light-gauge steel straps and blocking above and below the opening. The straps are loaded if the force is in tension; the blocking if it is compression. Typically these elements are in tension on one side of an opening and compression in the other, and the situation is reversed for shear line forces in the opposite direction.
To determine the axial strap force at the sides of the openings, where it is at its maximum, the force in the pier above or below the opening is apportioned to the straps and blocking on left and right side by the proportion of total length of the piers on each side of the opening:
where
– Strap/blocking force on the left side of an opening
– Strap/blocking force on the right side of an opening
– Unit shear force in the piers above and below the opening
– Length of opening
– Length of central pier to the left of the opening
– Length of central pier to the right of the opening
