Managing the View

The extents in real-world units of the area shown in a fully maximized Plan View or Elevation view window are shown in the Plan View and Elevation view settings, and can be adjusted at any time. However, there are several easier and quicker ways of positioning and navigating through your structure.

Display Settings

The Display settings appear when you click the Display button at the top of the Plan or Elevation view window, or by right clicking, when a menu appears.

Fit Building to Viewing Area

This adjusts the viewing area to comfortably fit the building you have created along with any load symbols, legends, etc. that may appear.

Fit Viewing Area to Window

This adjusts the viewing area that is defined for a maximized window to apply to windows as they are resized. If both of these settings are set, the building image will grow and shrink along with your window size.

Zoom

There are two ways to zoom the image:

Zoom Buttons

There is a Zoom in and Zoom out button on the Plan View and Elevation view toolbars. You can set the percentage increase or decrease with each touch of the button in Plan View or Elevation View Settings.

Mouse Wheel Zoom

Rotating the mouse wheel will also zoom the image. Pushing forward zooms in; pulling back zooms out. The same percentage increase from the settings applies to each click of the mouse wheel. If you are in the habit of using the mouse to zoom, you might want to set it to a finer percentage than one that would be used with the buttons.

Panning

You can pan Plan View to reposition your building image by pressing the right mouse button and dragging. It is often advisable to pan after zooming because zooming does not maintain the center of the building image in the same place in your view after scrolling

Scrolling

Whenever the building image and related information is too large for the view you have created by any of the above means, scroll bars appear at the side and at the bottom of the Plan View and Elevation View windows. Zooming in and then scrolling is often used to see information more clearly in complex models.

Show/Hide Menu

The Show/HIde button on the Plan View and Elevation View toolbar activates a long menu of items in the view to either show or turn off to reduce clutter. It is also used to choose between load cases (rigid/flexible diaphragm, wind/seismic, E->W vs W->E, etc.).

Note that these choices are echoed in the Loads and Forces and Options/Display Settings. These settings allow you to overhaul the configuration of items you want to view without having to open and close the Show/Hide menu repeatedly. They also allow you to save a configuration as a default for new files; for example if you do seismic design more than wind, set the seismic case as the default.
