Current Versions:

WoodWorks 2019, Update 1 – May 25, 2020

Changes were made to all three programs. The following changes apply to all programs:

1. Decrement of Concurrent License Pool  (Bug 3539)

The program was incorrectly limiting the number of concurrent users allowed to run the software, by decrementing the pool of available licenses whenever the license the status of the license was rechecked and refreshed by the license server. This happened in the following situations:

-      Leaving a program running for more than 24 hours.

-      Changing the License Management settings for how or how long a license is reserved

-      Re-starting the software after previously reserving a license, during the license reservation period

This has been corrected and the program now decrements the license pool only when the software is in use.

2. Deactivation of Shearwalls Wall Stud File List by Database Editor (Bug 3551)

When Database Editor is used to modify the list of material database files available to the Sizer and Connections programs in database.ini, it deactivated the wall stud files used by Shearwalls, so that Shearwalls used a list of files intended for the Sizer program. The default Sizer wall stud files include all of those used in Shearwalls, so in almost all cases this had no adverse effect. However, you had disabled one or more of those files with Database Editor, it could cause Shearwalls not to recognize a wall stud material used in a project file. Due to Bug 3550 listed in the Shearwalls Change History, this caused the wall stud material to appear blank and an eventual crash upon design.

This problem has been corrected.

3. Nordic Lam Material Database  (Change 8)

`For Nordic Lam beams, columns and built-up columns, the architectural grade is now a separate material called Nordic Lam+, and Nordic Lam contains only the industrial grade. The list of section sizes for Nordic Lam+  has had extension changes as compared to Nordic Lam architectural. For built-up columns, for both Nordic Lam and Nordic Lam+, widths greater than widths greater than 7-1/4” and depths greater than 35-5/8 have been removed.

WoodWorks 2019 – December 16, 2019

This is a major release which includes significant changes to all three programs. The following changes apply to all programs:

1. License Registration*

A new license registration system has been implemented that allows for concurrent licensing, yearly subscriptions, and separate licensing of the WoodWorks programs. Refer to the WoodWorks General Information file that is included with the installation, or the Online Help, for more information. The Online Help contains the information in WoodWorks General Information, and an explanation of the License Management settings that are in each of the programs.

2. New Program Installation*

There is a new installation package for the WoodWorks software.

a) Name of Suite

The WoodWorks suite of programs is no longer referred to as Design Office and is now simply WoodWorks.

b) Separate Purchase

It is now possible to purchase the programs separately; however those you have not purchased still appear in the installation and cannot be activated until you purchase a license for them.

c) Simplification of Start Menu

The start menu has been simplified and now includes only the icons for the Sizer, Shearwalls, Connections and Database Editor programs, a WoodWorks General Information file, and Uninstall utilities. Links to program documentation such as the User Manual, the Online Help, Change Histories documents etc., are now in the Help menu of the individual programs and hypertext links in the WoodWorks General Information file.

d) WoodWorks General Information

The information previously in the “Readme” files for all the programs and for Design Office in general has been consolidated into one WoodWorks General Information file.

In this file, information has been added regarding

-      the AppData section of the computer where WoodWorks editable resources are stored,

-      material database files included with WoodWorks,

-      design codes and other technical information supported with the current and previous versions of WoodWorks

-      instructions for installation deployment and distribution of licenses to multiple computers

Other information has been revised, updated and clarified if necessary.

e) Saving of Installation Options

It is now possible to save the installation options which allow you to either retain or refresh editable program resources such as material database files, default loads, standard shear walls, etc. . These options are then applied on the next update automatically.

f) Deployment on Multiple Computers

Using the file generated when saving installation options, it is possible to deploy the program to multiple computers via the .msi file and msiexec command, while suppressing the dialog that would ordinarily come up asking you to enter your installation options.

3. Change Histories*

The change history documents that were previously contained in the installation on your computer are now stored on the Web and accessed via a Features and Changes command in the Help menus

4. Running Uninstall Database as Administrator (Change 4b)*

The Uninstall Database utility now automatically runs as an Administrator if you have administrator privileges. If you don’t it does not allow the option of removing database files and other information from the Program Data section of the computer that is applicable to all users.

Refer also to the changes for Service Release 2 to WoodWorks 1, below, which was released simultaneously. These changes are also in WoodWorks 2019.

WoodWorks 11, Service Release 2 – December 16, 2019

1. Web Address for User Guide, Tutorials, and Training Videos (Change 2*)

The web address of that link that pointed to User Guide, Tutorials and Training Videos located under the Help menu of all the programs has been changed. This link now has the new web address and is http://woodworks-software.com/support/support-us-edition/

WoodWorks 11 Service Release 1 – May 15, 2017

Released to address problems and implement small improvements in the Shearwalls and Sizer programs.

WoodWorks 11 Service Release a - December 22, 2016

Released to address problems in the Shearwalls 11 release.

WoodWorks 11 – November 21, 2016

This is a major release which includes significant changes to all three programs. The following changes apply to all programs:

1. Default Installation Location

The default installation folder has changed to include that it is a WoodWorks product, as opposed to the Stand-alone version of Sizer, the country, and the major version (11). This allows you to have multiple editions on your computer by default, without overwriting editions from other countries, version years and WoodWorks package.

2. Start Menu

The menu folder now includes (USA), so that a Canadian version installed on the same computer will not overwrite the shortcuts to the program components.

3. On-line Help

a) Web Help

The On-line Help is no longer accessed from a file installed on your computer; it is now accessed via the Web. The Help will now be updated with corrections and for changes to the program as they occur.

b) Update for Version 11 Changes

The On-line Help has not yet been updated for the changes to each program for version 11. The Help will have the updated descriptions by Feb, 2017.

c) USA-specific Help

The Help is now specific to the USA version of the program. References to Canadian design procedures and program operation have been removed.

4. Invalid Keycode Message (QA Change 1)

The message that appears saying your keycode is invalid now directs you the WoodWorks Sales email address.

5. Product Code in Software ID (Feature 13)

The three-digit code in the software ID that identifies the software version has been expended to 5 digits.

6. Network Installation Error (Bug 3151)

Occasionally, when running the software from the network installation the program would fail, giving the following error message: "When running from a server, the initialization files must be in the 'Common Application Data' folder, refer to the documentation for information network installation."  This problem has been corrected.

7. Upgrade Notification (Feature 20) *

Upon opening the program, you are now notified if a more recent version is available, and provided with a download link to the updated version.

8. Updated Glulam Section Sizes (Feature 195)

Several I-joist compatible glulam sections have been added to the glulam balanced and glulam unbalanced database files to make the database correspond to the current NDS Supplement. These sizes are:

Western Species - 3.5 x 9.25, 3.5 x 20, 3.5x 22, 5.5 x 9.25, 5.5 x 20, 5.5 x 22

Southern Pine - 3.5 x 9.25, 3.5x 18, 3.5x 20, 3.5 x 24, 5.5 x 9.25, 5.5 x 18, 5.5x 20, 5.5 x 24.

9. MSR and MEL Materials (Feature 18)

a) NDS Supplement Update

Extensive changes were made to the MSR and MEL database files to implement changes in the 2015 Supplement Table 4C as compared to the 2012 edition. Note that the changes originally appeared in a 2013 addendum, but are new to the WoodWorks program.

b) Grading Agency

In addition, the program now restricts the materials to those for which there as a least one match between the grading rules agencies listed for the grades in Table 4C and those listed for the species in Table 4C Footnotes. Previously it included all combinations of species and grade, most of which don’t in fact exist.

In a few places, this necessitated the creation of new species designations like Hem-Fir (WCLIB) and S-P-F (S) (0.46) to distinguish between species that have different properties for the same E value when graded by different agencies.

Note that for MEL, this change restricts the database to Southern Pine and those species graded by the Canadian NLGA, which are the only MEL materials in existence.

10. Design Section Sizes for Sawn Timbers (Feature 17)

For sawn timbers, the NDS 2015 specifies that wet section sizes are to be used for design, whereas the NDS 2015 listed dry sizes. For 5”- and 6”-nominal timbers there is no change in size, for 8” to 14” the sizes have increased ¼”, e.g.  7-1/4” to 7-1/2”, and for 16” to 24” they have increased ½”, e.g. 15 to 15-1/2”

These changes originally appeared in a 2013 addendum to the NDS Supplement. Note that the wet sizes were listed in editions of the NDS prior to 2012, so WoodWorks is reverting the sizes to those that were in the program before version 10.

WoodWorks 10 Service Release 4a and 4b – October 8 and October 23, 2015

These service releases were created to address significant bugs affecting Shearwalls, and also include some minor fixes to the Sizer program.    Service Release 4a was released to only a limited number of users as the bulk of users were not informed that it was available until service release 4b had already been made.

WoodWorks 10 Service Release 4 – August 6, 2015

This service release includes bug fixes and/or new features to the all three programs.

The following change applies to all of the programs:

1. WoodWorks Installation Failure on Windows XP (Bug 2953)

Because of changes to the Windows installation routines, and because Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP, the WoodWorks 10 installation could no longer run on XP. At the end of the installation, an error message popped up and the installation would quit.

This has been corrected and the program can again be installed on XP.

WoodWorks 10 Service Release 3b – October 23, 2014

This service release was to change a default setting in Sizer.

WoodWorks 10 Service Release 3a – October 8, 2014

This service release included bug fixes to the Shearwalls and Connections programs.

WoodWorks 10 Service Release 3 – September 23, 2014

This service release involves bug fixes and/or new features to the all three programs.

The following changes apply to all of the programs:

1. NDS Online in Start Menu (Change 5)

The program again allows you to access the .pdf version of the National Design Specification (NDS On-line) via an icon in the start menu. For WoodWorks 10, it could only be accessed via the Help menu for each of the programs.

2. Digital Signature (Feature 12)

A digital signature verifying the reliability of the software publisher has been added to the installation, so that disconcerting messages about the software no longer appear when downloading and installing.

WoodWorks 10 Service Release 2a – February 5, 2014

This service release includes Shearwalls 10.21 which fixes bugs introduced in service release 2.

WoodWorks 10 Service Release 2 – January 14, 2014

This service release involves bug fixes and/or new features to the all three programs.

WoodWorks 10 Service Release 1 – July 24, 2013

This service release involves bug fixes to the Shearwalls program.

WoodWorks 10 – July 12, 2013

This is a major release which includes significant changes to all three programs.

The following changes apply to all of the programs:

1. Version Number in Start Menu (Bug 2427)

The major version number (i.e. “10”) has been added to the Start Menu group of program icons. This allows previous major versions of the program to be accessed from the start menu. Previously the icons would link to the most recent major version, and older versions had to be accessed by navigating to the installation in the Program Files folder.

2. Keycode Information for All Users (Change 1)

The registration key code information is now stored in the program data folder for all users and not in the profile of a particular user.  This allows multiple users can use the program on the same machine without entering the key code for each user.

3. SDPWS Version

Starting with Version 9.1, the 2005 version of the on-line Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic was provided with the installation, instead of the current 2008 version. This has been corrected.

4. Uninstall Database

A utility has been added to the WoodWorks installation that allows you to remove the materials database, hold-down database, initialization files containing program settings, default loads for Sizer, and standard walls for Shearwalls. The purpose of this utility is to resolve difficulties that may occur when you try to install a newer version of the program with an incompatible database from older versions. It can also be used to restore the databases and settings that were originally shipped with the program.

For Windows 7, the utility removes the information from C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\10\. A checkbox also allows you to remove the information from the back up folder C:\ProgramData\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\10\. If you are trying to resolve installation problems, then the check box should be checked. If you are trying to restore the original database and settings, it should not be checked.

The corresponding Windows XP folders are C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\10\ and

 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\10\.

WoodWorks 9 Service Release 3 – March 18, 2013

This service release involves bug fixes to the Sizer and Shearwalls programs.

The following changes apply to all of the programs:

1. Crash after Adding First Database File of its Type (Bug 2614)

Starting with version 8 of Database Editor, if a new database file is created when there are no other database files of that member type and database type (standard or custom) activated, the program crashed when you tried to enter species or grade properties. This occurs most frequently for custom walls, because no database files are included for them by default.

2. Retention of Outdated Southern Pine Database Files  (Bug 2498)

Installing WoodWorks 9.2 over version 9.15 and choosing to keep the database files from the previous version caused the proposed southern pine database files that were included in version 9.15 to be present in the 9.2 version.  The final southern pine changes were included in the regular database files for version 9.2, as a result the proposed southern pine database files were not up to date and are no longer needed. This has been corrected and the installation removes these files.

3. Deletion of Previous Installation in Second Install Folder (Bug 2497)

Installing a minor version such as Service Release 1 removed the previous service release installations, even if they are installed to a different Program Files folder. This made it difficult to have both versions installed on the same computer. This has been corrected and installing Service Release 2 allows you to retain Service Release 1 as well. Note that it was always possible to install two major releases, such as WoodWorks 9 and WoodWorks 8 on the same computer.

4. Network Installation Steps (Bug 2594)*

The Network Installations section of the WoodWorks ReadMe file has been updated to better explain the installation process when installing on a network. A clarification has been made to the server location of .ini files, stating that the file paths given also apply to a Windows Server operating system, depending on the age of the system. Also, a new step has been added which details the relocation of the .ini files from the server's shared folder to each program's installation folder.

5. Update of Versions Supported in Readme Files (Bug 2516)*

The Readme files indicated that Windows 2000 is supported, however neither the installation nor the programs will work with Windows 2000 since version 9.1. This is because the .NET framework and C++ redistributable files no longer support Windows 2000.   In the case of the installation, an error appears saying GetNativeSystemInfo is not found. The readme files for both for all programs were updated to remove Windows 2000. Only 0.08% of users use Windows 2000 as of March 2013, that is, one out of 1200.

WoodWorks 9 Service Release 2 – June 1, 2012

This service release involves bug fixes and/or new features to the all three programs.

The following changes apply to the entire WoodWorks installation:

1. Streamline Network Version Setup (Feature 8)

The procedure to set up multiple users running the program from a network server has been streamlined, as follows:

a) Copying of Sizer.ini and Shearwalls .ini file.

Previously, you had to manually copy a version of the programs initialisation (.ini )file to all the client machines. The program now does this automatically.

It is still necessary to modify the copy of the file on the in the server to indicate it is a network version and give the location of the program on the server. A new step is required, to copy the files from the Program Data area of the server for All Users to the corresponding folder in the Program Files area of the server. In other words, the ini files on the server will be found in one of the following locations

Windows 7 - C:\ProgramData\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\8\

Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\WoodWorks\CWC\Canada\8\

After modification, it has to be copied (not only moved) to the following location, if the default installation was selected:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodworks\Cdn\[program name]\

The advantage of this approach is that the file has to be copied only once, and within one machine, rather than distributed to several machines.

Note that the Connections program still requires copying of the .ini file.

b) Modification of Database.ini File

With the introduction of new locations for database and setting files with Version 8, the network installation required you to modify the file Database.ini by indicating it was a network installation. This is no longer necessary.

c) Instructions in “Read Me” File

The instructions in the WoodWorks Read Me file and the Read Me files for all the programs have been modified to explain the new procedure. In addition, the following corrections have been made:

-      The instructions regarding key code security instruct you to contact WoodWorks sales, rather than using a key code that is delivered with the software.

-      Instructions were given for those users who wish to modify the database files on their local machine using Database Editor on the server. These have been removed, as this procedure is not possible.

2. Version Number in Program Names

Each WoodWorks application now has the version number in the name of the program that appears in the program title bar, and over icons that appear in the start menu. This enables you to quickly identify the version of the program you are running.

3. Windows File Associations (Bug 2448)

The following changes apply to the WoodWorks WoodWorks output files that are used to store design results. Refer to the change history for each application for a list of the file extensions affected.

a) File Icons

For the output files shown in Windows Explorer, the generic icon showing a blank page has been changed to show a similar icon to those for the files in the program toolbar, with the addition of a small replica of the Woodworks logo. If there is no toolbar button accessing the file, than an icon representing a lines on a page with the logo is shown.

b) Double-click Action

When you double click any of the text output files or analysis graphs, the corresponding project file now opens in the program and immediately shows the output file in the program’s viewer. This is the same result as currently can be achieved by dragging the file into the program.

c) File Descriptions

The files now have descriptions that show up in Windows Explorer in the Type column and in the description of the selected file at the bottom.

4. Deletion of Previous Installation in Second Install Folder (Bug 2499)*

Installing a minor version such as 9.1 removed the previous service release installations, even if they are installed to a different Program Files folder. This made it difficult to have both versions installed on the same computer.

This has been corrected and installing 9.21 allows you to retain 9.1 as well. Note that it was always possible to install two major releases, such as 9.x and 8.x, on the same computer

5. Installation of Standalone Sizer After WoodWorks (Bug 2339)*

After Sizer standalone was installed, it eliminated a previous WoodWorks installation, including the Shearwalls and Connections programs. When WoodWorks was reinstalled, it required a key code, even though it had previously been registered. These problems have been corrected.

WoodWorks 9 Service Release 1d – Aug 26, 2011

Includes bug fix for Sizer 9.14

WoodWorks 9 Service Release 1c – August 25, 2011

Corrects problems for Sizer 9.13 and Shearwalls 9.13.

WoodWorks 9 Service Release 1b – August 18, 2011

This service release contains Sizer 9.12 and Shearwalls 9.11.

WoodWorks 9 Service Release 1a – August 9, 2011

This service release update was released to correct a problem in fpr  Sizer 9.11. All other programs and accessories are identical to WoodWorks 9 Service Release 1.

WoodWorks 9 Service Release 1 – July 28, 2011

This service release includes version 9.1 of Sizer, Shearwalls, and Connections. It was released to address many known problems with the programs and implement minor improvements.

WoodWorks Installation Package

WoodWorks introduced a new installation package for this version. No longer are there Upgrade, Custom and Full install packages. Instead, the installation allows you to decide whether you want to save certain aspects of your previous installations – settings for each program, materials database, hold-down database, or standard walls. Default loads for Sizer are considered part of the settings.

Program Data Locations

Because Windows 7 and Windows Vista operating systems do not allow write access to the Program Files folders to those users who are not running the program as Administrator, making it impossible for them to save changes to the material database, the hold-down database, settings, and standard walls, these files are now placed in a new location by WoodWorks.

It was also necessary for those users who were not administrators on their computers to enter a keycode each time the program was run.

These restrictions were more severe on Windows 7 than Vista.

The program now stores the support files for the program in the following folders

Windows 7/Vista:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\9\

Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\[username\]Local Settings\Application Data\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\9\

The program also saves the files to the following folders:

Windows 7:

C:\ProgramData\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\9\

Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\WoodWorks\CWC\USA\9\

These are repositories for the files to be copied to each new users’s data folders when they first use the program. This allows a system administrator to install the program, but others to use it without restrictions.

A more complicated set of procedures for network installations is described in the section on Network Installations above.

Database Editor Bugs: The following bugs were fixed in the WoodWorks Database Editor program. For further enhancements to Database Editor, refer to the Sizer release notes.

1.      Unusual Grade Properties

For custom database files, the program issued a warning saying that values in the Grade properties dialog for Fb, Fby, Fcp, Fcpy were allowed only in the valid range (100-10,000), but would disallow some close to the lower limit, such as 144 psi. The program no longer resets these values to zero upon reopening the dialog. Furthemore, the allowable range for grade properties has been relaxed - refer to the Sizer Release notes.

2.      Enabled Input for Standard Database Files

Standard database files are supposed to be non-editable, but the following fields for glulam members were not disabled for these files: the "Species Group" in the Species box, and the Stress Class or Combination buttons and "Can contain wane" checkbox in the "Type" data group of the Combination dialog. These are now disabled for standard database files.

WoodWorks 2004 - Service Release 2a-  August 23, 2006

This update 2a to Service Release 2 was issued to remedy problems for Shearwalls 2004d.

WoodWorks 2004 - Service Release 2 - July 4, 2006

Service Release 2 consists of the implementation of the ASCE 7-02 wind load provisions for Shearwalls 2004c, and a review of all known problems and user issues with the WoodWorks programs and a resolution to any of these that were significant and/or simple to resolve for Shearwalls 2004c and Sizer 6.4.

The following pertain to the Installation and the WoodWorks Database Editor program:

  1. Installation

The WoodWorks 2004 Service Release 2 installation has split the material database files into two categories. The categories are standard database files, and custom database files. This allows the user to choose not to install the custom database files if they wish to keep any custom changes they may have made to their custom database files in a previously installed version of WoodWorks WoodWorks.

  1. Database Editor 2004b Custom Glulam Databases
