Hold-down Configuration

Shearwalls allows you to define the configuration of hold-downs and anchorages to be used in the design of any shear wall. The Type/Hold-down Configuration input in the Wall and Shear Line Input form allows you to specify the locations that hold-downs are to be placed on the bottom plate of the shear wall segment.

Note that there is a corresponding hold-down on the top plate of a given shear wall segment only if one is specified at that location for the bottom plate of a wall segment on the next level above.

This choice can be over-ridden by the program during the design search for passing designs for unknown materials.

The Hold-down Configuration includes the following choices:

All segments

Hold-downs are placed at each end of the wall and on either side of every opening, except where there is no net overturning.

Ends of shear wall and where required

Hold-downs are placed at each end of the wall, as well as at the end of any shear wall segment where design would fail if a hold-down was not placed there.

Ends of shear line and where required:

Hold-downs are placed at each end of the shear line, as well as at the end of any shear wall segment where design would fail if a hold-down was not placed there.

Where required only

Hold-downs are placed only where design would fail if a hold-down was not placed there.
