Designing for Unknowns

In Sizer, you can leave any or all of the following parameters unknown, and the program will cycle through the unknown values and determine those sections that pass the design.

A list of passing sections is constructed; for each combination of species, grade and width that have at least one passing section, the smallest passing section is listed. For built-up sections, options different numbers of plies are listed. The list is shown in the Design Summary along with with the design response for the critical load combination for each principal design criterion.

The list of "suggested sections" also appears in Beam Input view, where you can select a section to design in more detail and display the results in the Design Check.

It is also possible to leave bearing lengths as unknown, and the program will either show the minimum required or select from a list of bearing lengths . Refer to Bearing Design - Beams, Joists and Floor/ Roof Panels for more details.

If Simpson Hangers are chosen as the support type, it is possible to leave the hanger model as unknown and the program will provide a list of acceptable hangers for you to select. If you leave it as unknown when designing, the program will select the hanger with the lowest cost index.
