Size Factors

Size Factor in bending, KZb

The KZb size factor in bending for SCL is determined by

KZb = (d1 / d)1/m (L1/L)1/m

where

d1 is the depth of a “unit volume member” as defined in ASTM Standard 5456

L1 is the length of a “unit volume member” s defined in ASTM Standard

d = depth of an application member

m = parameter as per Annex A1 of ASTM Standard 5456

L is the member length in use, presumably between supports.

In practice, the formula used by most manufacturers to derive size factors is

Kzb = (305/d)1/9.

The current database were recompiled with the parameter m in the formula to reflect the proprietary value given in the Evaluation report for that manufacturer. For SCL database files you make yourself, consult the manufacturer's literature. You can enter the value of the size factor for each section in the database using Database Editor.

Size Factor in shear, KZv

The KZv factor is taken as 1.0. as per CSA O86.

Size Factor in tension, KZt

The KZt factor is taken as 1.0, in the absence of proprietary information.

Size Factor in compression parallel to grain, KZc

The KZc factor is taken as 1.0, as per CSA O86.

Size factor in compression, KZcp (bearing)

This factor is implemented for SCL using Clause 6.5.7.5 as for all other materials.
