Wall Material Design

For each design case and each iteration of the design process, the program selects the shear wall materials on each shear wall. The selection of the final design walls from these design cases is described in Design Cases.

If all walls are forced to have the same material specification, one wall design is performed for all the walls on the line, otherwise a separate design is performed for each wall on the shear line.

For each wall or shear line, the critical shear resisting element for shear design is determined based on the shear force on the element and any capacity factors that depend on element geometry.

Design is performed by cycling through unknown parameters until a design is achieved that satisfies all design criteria .

Material exclusion settings

It is possible to indicate that the contribution to shear wall strength for seismic design of non-wood materials is to be neglected, for the purpose of having a higher response modification factor R. It is also possible to specify that these materials be excluded when combined with wood panels on the other side, for the purpose of allowing larger height-to-width ratios using SDPWS Table 4.3.4. These options are found in the Design Settings
