Hold-down Design

The program performs the design check for hold-down capacity at each wall or opening end. This is only a design check on a hold-down selected for the hold-down location. The program does not cycle through various possibilities to find a hold-down with sufficient capacity.

Vertical elements

There is currently no mechanism for entering hold-downs at the base of vertical elements transferring a force from an upper story via a vertical element to a location on a lower story that is not a wall or opening end on that story, so there no hold-down design for those hold-down locations.

Design Cases

For each design case (wind, seismic, and both force directions), the program checks the capacity of the hold-downs at each hold-down location against the combined factored uplift force.

Hold-down Design Table

There is a separate Hold-down Design table for each of the wind, seismic, rigid and flexible diaphragm cases. This table includes the following design information.

Hold-down

The name of the hold-down connection from the database used at hold-down location.

Combined Force

The factored components and the combined force are shown. The components shown are

Capacity

The capacity of the hold-down at the location.

Crit Resp.

The ratio of combined, factored hold-down force to capacity. A value greater than one indicates a failed design.

Design Summary

A list of any failed hold-downs for any of the design cases, and the walls they are found in, is shown in the Design Summary page of the Design Results output
