Nail Resistance Nu

Factored lateral nail resistance Nu is given in O86 12.9.3.1 as

Nu = nu KSF KDKT

K-Factors

Service Factor KSF

The service condition factor KSF comes from O86 12.2.1.7 and Table 12.1 for connections. The same service factor is applied to all walls in the structure based on the in-service and fabrication conditions input in the Design Settings. Green fabrication or wet service conditions correspond to moisture greater than 19%.

Duration Factor KD

This is set to 1.15 for both wind and seismic.

Treatment Factor KT

As the factor for studs is one unless they are incised, and treatment of plywood is rare, there is no program input of treatment factor and KT = 1, always.

Calculation of nu

nu is calculated by the yield mode equations a) - g) in O86 12.9.4.2. The following parameters are used in these equations for a single-shear-plane plywood-to-stud connection:

Side member thickness t1

This is the sheathing thickness in mm.

Nail diameter d

As shown in Wall Input view and listed in Fastener Sizes

Stud embedment strengths f2, f3

Determined from specific gravity G of the stud material from the WoodWorks database and the nail diameter.

Penetration length t2

Nail length minus the sheathing thickness, including the thickness of GWB underlay.

Nail yield strength fy

Determined from nail diameter.

Structural panel embedment strength

Determined from specific gravity G o the f plywood or OSB material from O86 Table A.11..
