Vrs Due to Nail Strength

The unit shear resistance governed by sheathing-to-framing connection strength is given in O86 11.6.2.2.(a) as

vrs = Vrs / Ls = f vd JD ns Jus Js Jhd

Safety Factor f

f = 0.8.

Unit shear strength vd

Unit lateral shear strength vd = Nu/s, where Nu is the factored unit lateral nail resistance from O86 12.9.3.1. Note that the modification K-factors are included in the factored nail resistance Nu so do not appear directly in the equation for Vrs

JD Factor for Diaphragm and Shear Wall Construction

As per 12.9.3.1 1 factor is always set to 1.3 for shear wall design.

Number of Shear Planes nS

As mid-panel shear walls are not to be included in Shearwalls, the value of ns is always 1.

Unblocked Factor Jus

Spacing Factor Js

As per 11.5.1, the fastener spacing factor Js is applied to each side of a wall with wood structural panel sheathing and lumber framing. This factor is

Js = 1 - [( 150 - s ) / 150]4.2

Shearwalls applies this factor as is to other framing materials such as structural composite lumber ( LVL, LSL, etc.). If you are using these framing materials, it is your responsibility to check the proprietary product literature for the adjustment factor for the material, as recommended in the Note to 11.5.1 and make the necessary adjustments to shearwall capacity manually.

Hold-down Effect Factor Jhd

Refer to Hold-down Effect Factor Jhd.
