Shear Design

A Design Setting allows you to use CSA O86 7.5.7.3 (b) instead of 7.5.7.3 (a) for shear design of beams less than 2 m3 in volume as per the note to 7.5.7.3 (a). It also allows you to use whichever of these provides an advantage, and to choose between (a) or (b) for columns

If you choose to use whichever provides an advantage, the program displays both solutions in the Design Check results.

In the method (a) the total factored load on the beam is compared to the resistance calculated by a formula which accounts for the influence of volume and loading pattern. Note that in in many cases, particularly for short heavily loaded beams, shear governs the design. Using this method results in increased resistance which leads to better economy in selecting a section.
