Local Building Code Capacity Modification

The values entered here factor the published plywood sheathing shear strengths in conjunction with all other factors. The factor does not apply to gypsum or fiberboard, for which the shear strength depends entirely on the strength of the material and not the nailing.

These original default value is 1.0 but you can change the default setting to conform with local conditions in your area.

Important Note: Despite the title of this setting, you can use this factor to simulate other load capacity reduction or increase effects that Shearwalls does not explicitly have in the program.

Seismic

The Los Angeles Building Code mandates or at one time mandated a 75% reduction in shear capacities for seismic design. This was the main motivation for the introduction of this factor in the program. If this factor is still in effect, users in the LA region should save .75 as their default value for this setting.

Wind

There are counties in the Southeast USA that require a reduction in shear strength for high wind loading. Users in this area should check their local building codes and apply the factor if the locally mandated shear strengths differ from those published in the SDPWS
