Wood Structural Panels
  1. Format of Nail Sizes

In Table 4.3A for shear wall shear capacity, nail diameter, length, and head diameter have been added in brackets to nails previously specified as 6d, 8d, etc. Previously they were only given in the Appendix.

    1. Input

In the fastener Size input, the diameter and length and are now shown in brackets, e.g. 10d (0.148" x 3")

    2. Output

All nail diameters and lengths are now listed in the legend to the Sheathing Materials table. Previously it just referred to SDPWS Appendix Table A1.

  2. 16d vs 12d Nails

It is unclear why the program allowed 16 pennyweight nails (3-1/2") rather than 12 penny weight (3-1/4"). Neither are listed in Table 4.3A, but a longer, thicker nail might be required for withdrawal resistance or to achieve penetration, especially for gypsum wallboard under wood structural panels.

16d nails are heavy 3-1/2" framing nails that are areused to nail sheathing to a wall. 3-1/4" 12d nails have a thinner shaft and could conceivably be used.

    1. Input

For structural sheathing and plywood siding. input selection 16d was replaced with e.g. 12d (0.148" x 3-1/4") for common nails. The diameter for box and casing nails is 0.128".

    2. Design

For shear design, the 12d nails function identically to the previous 16d s"election except for the calculation of penetration depths. For nail withdrawal calculations, the 0.148" or 0.128 x 3-1/4" diameter and length of the 12d nail is used in place of the the 0.162" or 0.135" x 3-1/2" 16d nail.

    3. Output

All nail diameters and lengths are now listed in the legend to the Sheathing Materials table. Previously it just referred to SDPWS Appendix Table A1 for wood structural panel fasteners.

  3. Deformed Nails vs Ring Shank Nails

A new note 9 to Table 4.3A requires smooth-shank nails. The checkbox indicating the nail was deformed (spiral) has been removed, and the increased nail withdrawal strength for C&C loads from NDS 12.2.3 is not possible for shear walls that are also subject to shear forces.

The NDS 2018 no longer allowed this calculation for deformed nails other than ring-shank nails anyway. So when exterior non-shearwalls are selected, the checkbox that previously was named Deformed is activated and called RIng-shank, and the available nails are from NDS Appendix Table L5, and nail withdrawal performed according to NDS Eqn. 12.2-5 for deformed nails. This is applicable only to non-shearwalls on exterior surfaces subject to out-of-plane wind loads.
