Although there have been no changes related to gypsum-based materials in SDPWS 2021 , the program was not showing the same fasteners as listed in the SDPWS. The fastener selections do not affect design so it was considered low-priority to update the selections in previous iterations of SDPWS updates. The selections have now been updated to conform to the current SDPWS.
For nail sizes that were previously represented by a pennyweight, e.g. 5d , the diameter and length in brackets has been added, e.g. 5d (0.086" x 1-5/8").
The Size column in the output will continue to show to show just the pennyweight e.g. 8d.
For those that were represented gauge followed by a length, e.g. 13 ga, 1-1/8 the gauge has been dropped, as it is not given in the SDPWS Table 4.3A. These nails are now represented by diameter and length , e.g. 0.092" x 1-1/8".
For these nails, the gauge will still appear in the Sheathing Materials output, due to space limitations, and the legend explains the correspondence between gauge and nail size.
Some nails have always been represented as diameter and length, e.g. 0.120" x 1-1/4", and the input representation of these nails has not changed. These nails are also listed by gauge in the output.
For all GWB and for 4’x8’ 5/8" GSB, SDPWS Table 4.3C defines two nail types, cooler nails and wallboard nails, with the exact same width and depth but different head sizes. Shearwalls defined a joint nail type Cooler/GWB nails. It has now been split into two separate types..
Instead of one nail type Cooler/GWB Nails there are two separate choices Cooler and Wallboard.
In the Type column of the Sheathing Materials table, what previously said Nail now says Cooler or Wboard.
For 4’x8’ 5/8" GSB, the program did not include cooler and gypsum wallboard nails although they were listed in the SDPWS. They have been added; formatted as described in the item above.
The Galv nails type for GSB was represented by Nail in the Sheathing Materials output. It now says Galv.
The generic 0.120" diameter nail was not included for for GWB and gypsum lath and plaster, but it is listed in SDPWS Table 4.3C for these materials. It has a variety of lengths that are used for different sheathing materials.
A new selection called Nails has been added for these fasteners.
The format of the size input will be e.g., 0.120" x 1-3/4", where the length can also be 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 depending on the material.
The existing galvanized 0.120 nails for GSB and 0.120 nails for wire lath and plaster has also changed to this size format, from the one that included the gauge.
For two-ply gypsum wallboard, the input shows 0.120" x 1-3/4", 2-3/8" , the two lengths referring to base and face ply.
The Size column of the Sheathing Materials table, shows 11 ga as it currently does and the correspondence is explained in the legend.
In the Type column previously said Nail but now says Gauge and the portion of the legend that shows the correspondence is prefaced by Gauge.
In he specification of wall materials that appears in Elevation View Elevation view, the format of these fastener sizes has changed from e.g. 11ga, 1-3/4" to 1-3/4" 11 ga. For 2-ply gypsum wallboard it is shown as 1-3/4" / 2-3/8" 11 ga.
When the 2-ply Gypsum Wallboard material is selected: .
The program showed 9b/7f in the input field for both Edge and Field spacing. Edge has been changed to Base spacing the Field to Face spacing. 9 is only selection in Base and 7 in Face.
In the Sheathing materials table, 9 was shown in both the Edge and Field columns It now shows 9 in Edge and 7 in Field . An explanatory comment has been added to the legend.
For Gypsum Lath and Plaster, the nail type is referred to as a Plasterboard nail, but the SDPWS lists a "gypsum wallboard blued nail".
The input designation of this nail has been changed to GWB blued nails, and in the Sheathing Materials table it now says GWB instead of Nail.
