Tension Capacity, net area

For all parallel to grain connections, the program considers the reduced tension capacity of the member because of the material removed to install fasteners.

Connections with loads at an angle to the grain, such as the sloped beam connections and the skewed Lapped Shear Connections, are not checked for net area.

Tension capacity is based on net area for all materials except glulam. In glulam members, tension capacity is governed by gross area capacity.

In the initialization file, users can enter a maximum percentage of the section that may be removed for bolt holes and shear plate notches. The factory default is to turn this feature off by setting the value to one.

This check is not performed for fasteners less than 1/4" in diameter, so it is not performed for all nailed and wood screw lapped shear connections.
