Fasteners

Fastener Choices

Type For structural wood panels, select common wire nails, ring nails, spiral nails or power-driven nails.. This affects the choices of nail lengths and diameters available, which in turn impact both shear resistance and withdrawal resistance to C&C loads.

Size - For common, spiral, or ring nails, you must select from standard nail lengths or diameters, and selecting one updates the other to the standard wire used for the nail size.

It is possible to type in your own nail size only if power-driven nails are specified, so this input can be used for non-standard nails other than power driven nails as well. The diameter must be at least 2 mm, and they must be at least 1.75" in length, as per NBC Table 9.23.3.5.A (however if it is not at least 2", a warning indicates that ring nails must be used.)

Fastener Spacing

You must select from list of standard interior and edge spacings, or select Unknown.

Edge spacing - The nail or screw spacing for panel edges, used for shear wall design.

Interior spacing - Also called "field" spacing, the nail or screw spacing for the interior of panels. It is used for component and cladding nail withdrawal design, and for the unblocked factor. You must select from list of standard spacings. This can be unknown.
