Restrictions and Warnings

No loads will be generated if the building is over 20 m in height, or the height-to-width ratio is greater than 1.

Warnings will be generated if the building is a multi-block structure, if it has an eccentric ridge line or hip roofs, or if the building has unevenly sized storeys, as these are not specifically addressed in the NBC.

When using NBC 2010, a warning will also appear if the height-to-width ratio is greater than 0.5, as Paragraph 26 of the Structural Commentaries says that this method is most appropriate for buildings under this ratio, although it may be used for buildings with a H/W ratio of 1.0.

The equation given in NBC 4.1.7.2.(c) is used in determining the width of a structure which has storeys of differing dimensions for this purpose.
