Seismic Overturning Force Amplification

To comply with O86 11.8.2, for seismic design when IEFaSa(0.2) is greater than or equal to 0.35 seismic hold-down forces based on applied loads are increased 20%.

Compression Forces

Although O86 11.8.2 refers specifically to hold-downs resisting uplift, this factor is also applied to the calculation of the compression force at the other end of the wall segment. This approach was taken on the advice of design code authorities.

Capacity vs Applied Load

This factor is not applied if shear wall capacity is used to create hold-down forces, rather than applied loads. However if 1.2 x applied load is greater than shear wall capacity, that value is used. A note to this effect is shown below the Hold-down Design table when it occurs.
