Hold-down and Compression Forces

Shearwalls generates hold-down and compression forces at locations subject to overturning, and transfers these forces down through the structure. Shear overturning, counteracting dead load, and wind uplift components to hold-down and compression forces are calculated and displayed in Elevation View. Compression forces are calculated at the opposite end of the overturning segment from hold-down forces for each force direction, leading to a compression force and a hold-down force at each location, but for different load cases.
