SCL Shear Deflection

Structural composite lumber manufacturers publish "Apparent E" modulus of elasticity values, which incorporate the effects of shear deflection, and "True E" for which shear deflection must be calculated. SCL materials in the WoodWorks database have both true E and apparent E, and you can choose which one of these are used to calculate deflection of SCL members.

Apparent E is not appropriate for complex span and loading conditions, and may be conservative for simple conditions, so the use of true E is recommended and should be used if the data is available from the manufacturer.

Note that apparent E is always used in the design search for unknown parameters.
