Design Codes and Standards

The subtopics in this section describe the interpretation of the design codes and standards implemented by Sizer.

The design provisions used in WoodWorks Sizerä are based on the 2024 National Design Specification® for Wood Construction (NDS®) and its Supplement, Design Values for Wood Construction. Reference is also made to the NDS Commentary.

These provisions have been adopted by the most recent versions of the ICC International Building Code (IBC 2024) A number of design code provisions directly from the IBC are also implemented.

The load types and combinations used in the program are from ASCE 7 2022 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures, section 2.3.1 for LRFD combinations and 2.4.1 for ASD combinations. These are referred to in IBC 1605.1.

For those users in jurisdictions that have not yet adopted IBC 2024, a Design setting allows you to use the IBC 2021, NDS 2018 and ASCE 7-16 standards. For editions previous to these, older versions of Sizer are available to registered users at our webstore. Version 11.3 implements IBC 2015, NDS 2015 and ASCE 7-10.

One provision comes from the AWC Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS 2021) (3.1.1.1 - Repetitive Member Factor for Wind Loads on Wall Studs ). Both IBC 2024 and IBC 2021 reference the 2021 SDPWS.

CLT design makes use of in APA PRG 320-19 Standard for Performance Rated CLT, the FPInnovations CLT Handbook, 2013 Edition , and the CSA O86-19 Canadian wood design standard.
